Camp Mystic leadership announces facility will not reopen this summer, following last year's deadly flooding
Floods that impacted the all-girls camp in Texas hill country resulted in the deaths of 25 campers, two teenage camp counselors, and the camp's director, along with over 100 other people in the area.
On Thursday, Camp Mystic said the all-girls facility in Central Texas would not reopen this summer. Last July, 25 campers, two teenage camp counselors, and the camp's director were killed along with over 100 other people in the area when torrential rains caused the Guadalupe River to rapidly rise and flood.
Earlier this month, Texas health officials said the camp may not meet safety requirements to reopen. This week, camp leadership announced it would withdraw its application to operate this season.
The decision comes amid state investigations into the camp's response to the deadly floods. Hearings conducted by Texas lawmakers have included pleas from parents to prevent the camp from reopening and testimony indicating that neither campers nor counselors were trained to respond to the emergency.
The disaster has opened conversations about enhancing youth preparedness for extreme weather events as well as improving early warning systems and response times.
